Scrambling to cover billions of dollars in cost overruns at its bankrupt Westinghouse nuclear unit, Toshiba had pledged to have a signed definitive agreement for the $18 billion sale of the unit - the world's No. 2 producer of NAND chips - by the shareholders meeting. Prospects for a quick and smooth deal have become highly uncertain as Western Digital Corp which jointly runs Toshiba's main semiconductor plant, is vehemently opposed to a sale that does not include it and is seeking a U.S. court injunction to prevent any deal that does not have its consent.

"The stock market seems to be running pretty much on fumes," San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams said in an interview carried on Sydney's ABC News affiliate and available on the internet on Tuesday. Williams, who is giving a series of talks in Australia, said that for his part he doesn't believe any Trump fiscal policies will begin to affect the economy until 2018 or 2019.
