Wall Street indexes and the U.S. dollar ended a volatile session lower after a week of drama in Washington intensified doubts about President Donald Trump's ability to deliver on pro-growth policy promises such as tax reform. After a late morning boost on Trump's firing of controversial White House strategist Steve Bannon, the dollar and U.S. equities lost their lustre as investors were left wary after a week in which Trump alienated potential allies. Investors also questioned how much Trump's ouster of Bannon - a conservative media entrepreneur and activist who was a darling of Trump's base - would pave the way for policies such as tax reform.

The United States on Friday formally launched an investigation into China's alleged theft of U.S. intellectual property, a widely expected move following a call from President Donald Trump earlier this week to determine whether a probe was needed. The probe is the administration's first direct measure against Chinese trade practices, which the White House and U.S. business groups say are bruising American industry. "After consulting with stakeholders and other government agencies, I have determined that these critical issues merit a thorough investigation," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, the nation's top trade negotiator, said in a statement.

U.S., Canadian and Mexican negotiators on Friday began digging into some of the thorniest issues in modernizing the North American Free Trade Agreement, including rules of origin for goods produced in the region, services trade and a controversial dispute settlement system. A copy of the NAFTA negotiating agenda obtained by Reuters reveals that meetings on rules of origin, a provision that determines how much of a product is made in North America, were expected to last through Sunday, when the initial round concludes. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer emphasized at the opening of the talks on Wednesday that the United States was seeking major increases to the regional content required for goods to pass tariff-free between the three countries, including a demand for "substantial U.S. content" in the automotive sector.

After paying customers millions of dollars for opening phony accounts they did not want, Wells Fargo & Co has said it is now grappling with the possibility it harmed customers by closing real accounts they needed, leaving them without access to funds. Wells, the third-largest U.S. bank, disclosed in a regulatory filing on Aug. 4 that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is looking into the matter, one of many regulatory probes the bank faces over its treatment of depositors and borrowers. A Reuters review of the regulator's complaints database found several instances of customers reporting financial hardship in recent years after Wells Fargo unexpectedly froze or closed their accounts.

The Trump-fed rally in stocks, lately showing signs of faltering as the long Wall Street summer nears its end, faces a key test in the weeks ahead with the approach of a historically unkind season for equities and a clutch of issues - such as raising the debt ceiling - awaiting the return of lawmakers to Washington. With September, typically the worst month in the year for stocks, on the doorstep, investors are likely to be nervous that cracks seen in the more than-eight year bull run in equities will turn into a steeper selloff. "September is historically one of the most volatile months of the year," said Michael Purves, chief global strategist at Weeden & Co in New York.

Deere & Co reported quarterly sales below estimates and its full-year farm equipment sales forecast indicated sluggish demand for its trademark green tractors and harvesting combines in the United States, sending its shares down 9 percent. While analysts have said the weakness in the farm sector has bottomed out, bumper corn and soybeans harvests in the United States have kept prices low, leaving farmers with less cash to spend on farm equipment. "Investors have rewarded Deere shares with meaningful multiple expansion as (agriculture) markets have bottomed and management made visible and meaningful progress on cost reduction," Dobre noted.

Meanwhile, the gap between yields on southern European bonds issued by Spain and Portugal and those on higher-rated German debt widened in a global retreat from riskier assets that saw the biggest drop in three months on Wall Street overnight. "We have seen the first wobble in equities for some time now, with the S&P closing down 1.5 percent last night, so there's a bit of a risk-off safe haven bid for bonds at the moment," said Daniel Loughney, portfolio manager at AllianceBernstein.
